About the club

AC Milan were founded in 1899 by Herbert Kilpin, an Englishman who fell in love with the city - which is why the club still spells its name "Milan" rather than "Milano". In red and black, the Rossoneri built one of the game's great dynasties: seven European Cups, a long list of league titles, and eras of football so beautiful they defined whole decades in Europe.

A Milan night at San Siro, beneath the flags of the Curva Sud, is one of the finest experiences this game has to offer: the singing never stops, the colours swallow the stand, and you feel the history in every corner. Between matches, Milan the city awaits - the Duomo, the arcades, the food, the style. A city that honours both football and the good life.

The stadium

San Siro is footballing royalty: around 75,000 seats in three steep rings, spiralling concrete towers at the corners and a roof that traps the noise inside. The Curva Sud, the beating heart of the Milan support, sings for the full ninety minutes. Sitting there on a match night - even a completely ordinary one - you understand why they call it "the La Scala of football".

Things to do in Milan

Casa Milan

The club's home in the Portello district: the Mondo Milan museum with the trophies and historic shirts, plus a huge store. A pilgrimage for anyone in red and black.

The Duomo and the Galleria

The marble cathedral with its hundreds of spires, and beside it the grand Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II arcade. Two hours on foot in the centre and you've met the city's icons.

Aperitivo on the Navigli

In the evening the bar lights come on along the canals: one drink earns you a table full of Italian snacks. The most Milanese possible way to start a match night.

Leonardo's Last Supper

The world's most famous mural lives in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Entry is in small groups only - book your slot weeks in advance.

Panzerotti by the Duomo

A few steps from the cathedral stands a legendary bakery all of Milan queues at for a panzerotto - a fried dough pocket filled with tomato and mozzarella. Worth every minute of the wait.

Worth knowing

  • The club was actually founded as the "Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club" - yes, cricket. The founders' English heritage survives in the name and the colours.
  • Seven European Cups - more than any club in the world except one. Very few teams can even join that conversation.
  • The stadium is officially named after Giuseppe Meazza - a star who shone mostly for Inter. Perhaps that's why Milan fans insist on simply calling it "San Siro".
  • The Derby della Madonnina is named for the golden statue of the Madonna atop the Duomo's highest spire - the "little Madonna" watching over the city.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01The lilac metro (M5) stops at San Siro Stadio, right by the ground. Arrive at least ninety minutes early - security checks take time at big matches.
  2. 02Don't forget your passport: tickets in Italy carry a name, and stewards match ID to ticket at the gates.
  3. 03Eat in the city centre before heading out - around San Siro it's mostly stalls. Buy your shirt at Casa Milan, where the range is biggest.
