About the club

Borussia Dortmund are the beating heart of German football's working-class soul. Founded in 1909 in a pub near Borsigplatz, BVB grew out of the Ruhr's coal-and-steel culture into one of Europe's biggest clubs - German champions many times over, European champions in the 1990s, and famous everywhere for brave, fast, attacking football played in front of the game's most spectacular crowd.

Visiting Dortmund is about one thing above all: standing before the Yellow Wall as tens of thousands sing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' together before kick-off. The city itself is friendly, affordable by big-league standards and devoted to its club - on match day the whole town wears yellow and black. For pure football atmosphere, there is simply no better trip in Europe.

The stadium

Signal Iduna Park - the old Westfalenstadion - is German football's cathedral. More than 80,000 fans pack it for every home game, and the south stand, the famous 'Yellow Wall', is Europe's largest standing terrace: some 25,000 people bouncing and singing as one. The noise reaches you in physical waves, and even completely neutral visitors walk out slightly changed.

Things to do in Dortmund

German Football Museum

Germany's national football museum, right opposite the main station - trophies, memorabilia and hands-on exhibits. A must for any football fan.

Dortmunder U

A historic brewery tower turned arts and culture centre, crowned by the giant golden 'U'. The upper floors offer a lovely view over the whole city.

Alter Markt

The old market square at the heart of town - pubs, restaurants and hundreds of fans in yellow and black on every match day. This is where the pre-match buzz lives.

Phoenix See

A lake created on the site of a former steelworks - a symbol of the city's reinvention. A pleasant promenade with waterside cafés and restaurants, great for families.

Borsigplatz

The square where the club was born in 1909 - and where every trophy is still celebrated today. A short, genuine pilgrimage to Borussia's roots.

  • The club is named after a beer - its founders borrowed 'Borussia' from a local brewery that operated near Borsigplatz.
  • The south stand, the 'Yellow Wall', holds around 25,000 standing fans - the largest terrace of its kind in European football.
  • BVB was founded in 1909 in a pub, by young men who went ahead and formed the club despite the objections of their local chaplain.
  • Every Dortmund title celebration ends the same way: the team parades around Borsigplatz, the square where it all began.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01From downtown, take the U45/U46 light rail to the stadium stops, or walk it in about half an hour. Arrive early - watching the Yellow Wall fill up is an experience in itself.
  2. 02Before the game, settle in at the Alter Markt with a local beer and a grilled bratwurst - the whole city gathers there on match days.
  3. 03The club's giant store sits right by the stadium and there are fan shops in town too; staying near the main station keeps everything within walking distance.
