About the club
Atlético Madrid is the other half of Madrid - the gritty, passionate, never-say-die half. Founded in 1903 by Basque students, the club built its identity on defiance: red-and-white stripes, a working-class soul, and the nickname "Los Colchoneros" - the mattress makers. Where the neighbours expect to win, Atleti fans expect to fight, and that fight is the whole point.
An Atleti match is one of European football's great atmosphere experiences. The Metropolitano's south stand sings for ninety minutes without pause, the whole bowl joins the anthem before kick-off, and the noise when a goal goes in is something you feel in your chest. Pair it with Madrid's food, museums and late-night energy and you get a weekend that feels less like tourism and more like belonging.
The stadium
The Metropolitano, Atlético's home in the east of the city, holds around 70,000 under a spectacular curved roof that seems to float above the stands. It is a modern arena that somehow kept an old-school heart: steep tiers, clear sightlines from every seat, and a wall of red and white behind the goal that never stops singing.

Things to do in Madrid
Royal Palace & Almudena Cathedral
The enormous royal palace - one of Europe's largest - with the cathedral beside it. The changing of the guard and the views from the plaza are free.
El Rastro Flea Market
Madrid's legendary flea market takes over the streets of La Latina on Sundays. Go in the morning, haggle a little, then stay for vermouth and tapas.
Madrid Río Park
The park built along the Manzanares river - playgrounds, bridges, and at its end the Parque Vicente Calderón, opened in December 2024 on the site where Atlético's beloved old ground once stood: a meadow shaped like the old pitch, ringed by a running track. Perfect for families.

- Atlético was founded in 1903 by Basque students as a Madrid branch of Athletic Bilbao - which is why both clubs wear red-and-white stripes.
- The nickname "Los Colchoneros" - the mattress makers - comes from the stripes, which matched the fabric of old Spanish mattresses.
- The club's crest carries the bear and the strawberry tree - exactly the same symbol as the city of Madrid's own coat of arms.
- The Metropolitano hosted the 2019 Champions League final - less than two years after it opened.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01Metro line 7 runs to Estadio Metropolitano station, right by the ground - allow 30-40 minutes from the centre and arrive early, because the post-match metro queues are long.
- 02The stadium sits in a residential area with limited food options - eat in the city centre before you travel, or make do with the stalls around the ground.
- 03Stay central - Sol or La Latina - as the stadium's neighbourhood is quiet at night. And be in your seat fifteen minutes before kick-off: the anthem, sung by the entire stadium, is worth the trip on its own.
