About the club

Tottenham Hotspur, founded in 1882, is one of London's grandest old clubs, born and raised in the north of the city. Its Latin motto - "To Dare Is To Do" - sums up a long tradition of bold, stylish attacking football that produced the historic Double of 1961 and, in 1963, the first European trophy ever won by a British club. The North London derby against Arsenal remains one of football's fiercest rivalries.

Visiting Spurs feels like a glimpse of football's future: a spectacular modern stadium, a vast single-tier South Stand that turns into a wall of sound, beer brewed on site and a big-event buzz that starts far down the High Road. Around it all sits a real, unpolished slice of north London that lives the club all week - pair it with a few days in the city and it's a trip that's hard to beat.

The stadium

Opened in 2019, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is widely regarded as one of the most advanced grounds in world football. Around 62,000 seats sit remarkably close to the pitch, and the single-tier South Stand - roughly 17,500 fans singing as one - generates a genuine wall of noise. Sightlines are superb from every corner, and at full roar the place simply engulfs you.

Things to do in London

Camden Market

A riot of colour along the canal: hundreds of street-food stalls, vintage fashion and unmistakable London energy. Easy to lose half a day here.

Borough Market & the South Bank

London's most celebrated food market, right by London Bridge. Graze your way through, then follow the south bank of the Thames - one of the city's great walks.

Matchday pubs on the High Road

In the hours before kick-off, Tottenham's main street fills with thousands of fans, songs and pints. The atmosphere starts here, long before you take your seat.

The West End

London's theatre district is the perfect post-match evening: world-class musicals, restaurants and bright lights.

The great museums - free

The British Museum, the National Gallery and the Natural History Museum all cost nothing to enter - a guaranteed rainy-day rescue that kids enjoy too.

Worth knowing

  • Spurs were the first British club to win a European trophy - the Cup Winners' Cup in 1963.
  • The club is named after Harry Hotspur, a medieval knight immortalised by Shakespeare, whose family held lands around Tottenham.
  • The pitch splits into three giant trays and slides away, revealing an artificial surface underneath that hosts NFL games.
  • In 1961 Tottenham won the league and FA Cup Double - the first English club to manage it in the twentieth century.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01Easiest routes: the Overground to White Hart Lane station, minutes from the gates, or the Victoria line to Seven Sisters and a 25-minute walk up the High Road. Allow extra time for post-match crowds.
  2. 02Arrive 90 minutes to two hours early - the food stalls and bars inside the ground and the enormous club shop are worth exploring without rushing.
  3. 03Base yourself in central London somewhere with a direct Victoria line or Overground link (King's Cross, Liverpool Street) so you get the city and an easy ride to the ground.
