About the club
Sevilla is one of Spanish football's founding fathers - established in 1890, making it among the oldest clubs in the country, with a Scottish first president and a stubborn Andalusian soul. But its modern legend was written in Europe: no team in history has won the UEFA Cup / Europa League more often, a competition Sevilla treats as personal property.
A trip to Sevilla is a double win: one of Europe's most beautiful cities, and inside it one of its loudest grounds. The Sánchez-Pizjuán on a match night is pure Andalusian theatre - the anthem, sung by tens of thousands of voices together, will give you goosebumps before a ball is kicked. The stadium
The Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, in the Nervión district, holds around 43,000 - and manages to sound like double that. The stands press close to the pitch, the giant tiled mosaic above the main entrance is one of football's most beautiful facades, and when the anthem starts, the whole ground shakes. Things to do in Seville
The Cathedral & the Giralda
The largest Gothic cathedral in the world, holding Columbus's tomb, with the Giralda tower beside it - climb its ramps for the best view in the city.
The Real Alcázar
A breathtaking royal palace of Moorish courtyards, tiles and gardens - book ahead and give it at least two hours.
Plaza de España & María Luisa Park
The vast semicircular plaza with its tiled alcoves and little canal, right next to Seville's grandest park. Made for photos and slow afternoons.
Triana
Cross the bridge to the old sailors' and potters' quarter: ceramics shops, tapas bars along Calle Betis with river views, and flamenco in the place it was born.

The whitewashed lanes of the old Jewish quarter hide some of the best tapas bars in the city. Order little, order often, and move on.

- The Sánchez-Pizjuán hosted the epic 1982 World Cup semi-final between France and West Germany - still remembered as one of the greatest matches ever played.
- Sevilla's anthem was written by a fan - the singer El Arrebato - for the club's centenary celebrations; today the whole stadium sings it before every match.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01The stadium is in Nervión - an easy 25-30 minute walk from the old town, or a short ride on metro line 1 (Nervión / Gran Plaza stations). The streets around it fill up beautifully before kick-off.
- 02Seville is one of the hottest cities in Europe - in summer do as the locals do: sights in the morning, shade and a long lunch at midday, football and tapas at night. And drink water constantly.
- 03Be inside for the anthem - the most stirring pre-match moment in Spain - and buy your merchandise at the club store by the stadium; the bars around the ground on match day are an experience in themselves.
