About the club

Inter were born in 1908, when a group of members broke away from Milan's football club over a single principle: foreign players deserved a place on the pitch too. The name - Internazionale - was a statement of intent, and it still is. More than a century on, the Nerazzurri are one of Europe's true giants: twenty-one league titles, European Cups, and big nights that long ago passed into legend.

Visiting Inter means San Siro on a match night - something every football fan owes themselves at least once. The Curva Nord's choreographies, tens of thousands of voices singing before the teams even appear, the shiver when the anthem plays. And all around waits Milan itself: fashion, design and wonderful food, everything a short ride away. One weekend, two enormous experiences.

The stadium

San Siro - officially the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza - is one of world football's great cathedrals: around 75,000 seats, spiralling concrete towers at the corners and steep tiers that hang almost over the grass. Inter share it with Milan, so history soaks into every corner. Even from the top ring you see everything, and on big nights the noise simply wraps around you.

Things to do in Milan

The Duomo and its rooftop

The vast marble cathedral is the heart of Milan. Climb to the rooftop and walk among hundreds of spires, with the whole city - and on a clear day the Alps - spread below.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The magnificent arcade linking the Duomo to La Scala opera house. Find the bull mosaic on the floor - spinning on it with your heel is said to bring good luck.

The Navigli canals

Milan's canal district is the capital of aperitivo: order a drink and a table of snacks arrives with it. On match evenings the bars here fill up with fans.

The Brera district

Cobbled lanes, galleries and cafés - Milan's bohemian quarter is perfect for an afternoon wander, with the Pinacoteca di Brera art gallery at its heart.

Sforza Castle and Sempione Park

A mighty Renaissance fortress with museums inside, and the city's biggest park stretching behind it - a perfect stop for families and for a rest between sights.

Worth knowing

  • Inter are the only club to have played every single Serie A season since the league began - they have never, ever been relegated.
  • In the Derby della Madonnina against Milan, both teams are technically at home - San Siro belongs to both. Inter's end is the Curva Nord, Milan's the Curva Sud.
  • In 2010 Inter became the first Italian club to win the treble - league, cup and Champions League in a single season.
  • The club anthem is called "Pazza Inter" - "Crazy Inter" - a celebration of the club's historic flair for drama, sung by the crowd before every home game.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01The lilac metro line (M5) runs straight to San Siro Stadio station - the simplest way to the ground. On derby nights leave extra early: the whole city moves in one direction.
  2. 02Tickets in Italy are personal and carry your name - bring your passport, checks happen at the gates, and aim to arrive about ninety minutes before kick-off.
  3. 03Do aperitivo on the Navigli canals before the game, and buy your merchandise at the official store in the city centre - the stalls by the stadium are crowded and the queues long.
