About the club

Chelsea are a thoroughly London story: a club founded in 1905 in a pub across the road from the ground - the stadium came first, and the team was created to fill it. From fashionable west London grew one of the powerhouses of the English game, with league titles, European trophies, and the swagger of a club used to competing for silverware and producing stars year after year.

Match day at Stamford Bridge feels different from any other big English ground: you're in the middle of a buzzing London neighbourhood, between the fashionable King's Road and Fulham Road, and the stadium simply appears between the houses. Add the South Kensington museums a few Tube stops away, world-class shopping and a brilliant restaurant scene, and you have a perfect London weekend built around top-level football.

The stadium

Stamford Bridge has been Chelsea's home since the club's very first day - one of England's oldest and most distinctive grounds, holding around 40,000. It's compact and close, with fans practically sitting on top of the pitch, and the Shed End keeping the old songs alive. Its setting, in the middle of a residential London neighbourhood, gives it a charm the big modern bowls can't match.

Things to do in London

King's Road

The street that defined British fashion in the '60s and '70s, still packed with shops, cafés and restaurants. Walking distance from the stadium - perfect for the hours before kick-off.

South Kensington Museums

The Natural History Museum, Science Museum and the V&A - three of the world's great museums, free to enter, two Tube stops away. Wonderful for families.

Battersea Park & Power Station

Across the river: a huge Thames-side park and the iconic power station, reborn as a shopping and leisure destination. A lovely riverside walk from Chelsea.

Fulham Broadway Pubs

On match day the streets around Fulham Broadway turn blue. Grab a spot in one of the pubs a couple of hours before kick-off and join the singing.

Stamford Bridge Tour & Museum

The players' tunnel, the dressing rooms and a rich museum covering more than a century of history - one of London's best stadium tours.

Worth knowing

  • The pub where Chelsea were founded in 1905 - then The Rising Sun, today The Butcher's Hook - still stands directly opposite the stadium gates. You can have a pint exactly where it all began.
  • Stamford Bridge opened back in 1877 as an athletics ground - almost three decades before Chelsea even existed.
  • Before Wembley was built, the FA Cup final was played at Stamford Bridge three years running, from 1920 to 1922.
  • Chelsea's first nickname was 'The Pensioners', after the veteran soldiers of the Royal Hospital Chelsea - you can still spot them around the neighbourhood in their traditional scarlet coats.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01Fulham Broadway station (District line) is five minutes' walk from the ground. It gets extremely busy after the final whistle - consider walking to a nearby station instead.
  2. 02Come early and make a day of it: lunch on the King's Road, a browse in the megastore at the stadium, and into your seat half an hour before kick-off.
  3. 03Hotels around Kensington or Earl's Court leave you a stop or two from the stadium and close to central London - options right by the ground itself are limited.
