About the club
Fulham, founded in 1879, is London's oldest professional football club - and arguably its most charming. Never pretending to be a giant, it has built an identity all of its own: a neighbourhood club of rare elegance on the banks of the Thames, with a rich history, a beautifully preserved Victorian ground and loyal supporters who prefer warmth to chaos. For lovers of old-fashioned English football, there is no better address.
A Fulham matchday begins long before kick-off: you walk to the ground through Bishop's Park, along the Thames, past swans, rowing boats and old trees instead of traffic - perhaps the loveliest approach in English football. Inside waits a relaxed, family atmosphere with seats close to the pitch, and at full time you're minutes from the pubs of Putney and the charm of Hammersmith. Pure, gentle football pleasure.
The stadium
Craven Cottage is a jewel: an intimate ground of around 28,000 right on the bank of the Thames, among the oldest and prettiest in England. The historic Johnny Haynes Stand, over a century old, keeps its brick facade and original wooden seats, and in one corner stands the famous Cottage itself - a little pavilion unlike anything else in football. Watching a game here feels like stepping into a Victorian postcard.

Things to do in London
Bishop's Park & Fulham Palace
A riverside park that runs to the stadium gates, beside historic Fulham Palace - home to the Bishops of London for centuries, with free gardens and a museum.
Riverside pubs in Putney & Hammersmith
Historic pubs on the Thames, some centuries old - settle in with a pint by the water and watch the rowing crews glide past. London at its purest.
The King's Road, Chelsea
West London's most stylish street - boutiques, cafes and a proud place in 1960s fashion history. A perfect afternoon's wander.
Kew Gardens
The Royal Botanic Gardens, a World Heritage Site with spectacular Victorian glasshouses - a short ride from Fulham and wonderful for families.
Notting Hill & Portobello Road
Pastel houses, antique shops and the famous street market - at its liveliest on Saturdays. The perfect companion to a West London football weekend.
Worth knowing
- Craven Cottage takes its name from a real royal hunting lodge built on the site in 1780, long before football arrived.
- The Cottage in the corner of the ground is a genuine 1905 pavilion - its balcony is still used by players' families on matchdays.
- The Johnny Haynes Stand, designed by legendary stadium architect Archibald Leitch in 1905, is a protected heritage building - and you still sit on its original wooden seats.
- Fulham began life in 1879 as a church Sunday-school team - which is how it became London's oldest professional football club.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01Take the District line to Putney Bridge and walk through Bishop's Park along the river - leave early, as the paths and gates are narrow and fill up close to kick-off.
- 02Stop at a riverside pub in Putney or Hammersmith before the game - it's part of the local ritual and family-friendly too.
- 03It's one of England's smaller, most in-demand grounds, so book tickets as early as you can - and for the full historic experience, choose seats in the old Johnny Haynes Stand.
