About the club
Eintracht Frankfurt, founded in 1899, are one of Germany's grand old clubs - 'Die Adler', the Eagles. German champions in the 1950s, winners of European trophies across the decades, and finalists in what many still call the greatest European Cup final ever played, they carry real history. Above all, though, Eintracht are famous for their supporters: loud, loyal and endlessly theatrical.
Match day in Frankfurt is special because of where and how it happens: the stadium sits inside the city forest, so tens of thousands of fans stream through the trees together, and the choreographies inside are among the most spectacular in Europe. The stadium
Deutsche Bank Park - still the 'Waldstadion', the forest stadium, to every local - holds just over 60,000 and sits deep inside Frankfurt's city woods. The stands are steep, the roof traps the noise, and the home end produces giant choreographies that cover entire tiers in colour. Things to do in Frankfurt
Römerberg
Frankfurt's historic square, ringed by reconstructed half-timbered houses and the old town hall. The natural starting point for any visit to the city.
Museumsufer
A row of museums along the River Main - art, film, architecture and more. Even if you skip the exhibitions, the riverside walk and skyline views are worth it.
Sachsenhausen
The apple-wine district - cobbled lanes, long wooden tables and hearty local cooking. This is where you drink Apfelwein, Frankfurt's signature tipple.
Main Tower
The city's only skyscraper with a public viewing platform - 360-degree views over 'Germany's Manhattan' and the river below.
Kleinmarkthalle
A beloved covered market with dozens of stalls - local sausages, cheeses, wines and delicacies from around the world. Stop to try Grüne Soße, Frankfurt's famous green sauce.
Worth knowing
- The club's mascot is a real golden eagle named Attila, who appears at home matches and soars over the pitch on big occasions.
- Muhammad Ali fought a world-title boxing match at the Waldstadion in 1966 - this ground has hosted far more than football.
- Eintracht played in the 1960 European Cup final against Real Madrid in front of more than 100,000 fans - a game many still call the greatest final of all time.
- The stadium was built inside the city forest back in the 1920s, and the walk to it through the trees is part of the ritual of every home game.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01Take the S-Bahn to 'Stadion' station and join the walk through the forest with thousands of fans - leave early, because that walk is part of the experience.
- 02Before or after the game, settle into an apple-wine tavern in Sachsenhausen - schnitzel, green sauce and a glass of Apfelwein are the local ritual.
- 03Stay central or near the main station - everything is close, and the Eagles have fan shops downtown too, so you can buy a shirt without the match-day queues.
