About the club
Real Madrid is football royalty in the most literal sense - the word "Real" means "royal", a title granted by King Alfonso XIII in 1920. Founded in 1902, the club grew into the most decorated name in European football, with more European Cups than anyone else and a self-image to match: white shirts, the biggest stages, and an expectation of winning that never switches off.
A visit to the Bernabéu feels like an audience at court. The stadium rises out of the Paseo de la Castellana like a spaceship, the pre-match buzz spills out of the surrounding bars, and when the teams walk out you understand why players dream of this stage. Add Madrid itself - tapas, museums, late dinners - and you have a complete football weekend.
The stadium
The Bernabéu - officially shortened from "Santiago Bernabéu" to simply "Bernabéu" in November 2025, and still named after the club's legendary president - holds around 83,000 and sits right in the city on the Paseo de la Castellana. After its spectacular renovation it looks like a futuristic silver shell, with a wraparound video screen inside - yet the steep stands kept the old sense of awe. Sitting there at night, under the lights, is one of football's great experiences.

Things to do in Madrid
Plaza Mayor & Puerta del Sol
Madrid's historic heart: the grand arcaded square and the plaza that marks kilometre zero of Spain. Start every day here and wander outward.
The Prado Museum
One of the world's great art museums - Velázquez, Goya, Bosch. Even an hour inside is worth it, and it makes a perfect morning before an evening match.
Retiro Park
The city's green lung: rowing boats on the lake, the Crystal Palace, street performers. Great for families - and for recovering from a late night.
Tapas in La Latina
Calle Cava Baja in La Latina is wall-to-wall tapas bars. Arrive hungry and hop from bar to bar like the locals do.
Churros at San Ginés
The legendary chocolatería near Sol has been serving churros dipped in thick hot chocolate since 1894 - open almost around the clock, perfect after a night match.
Worth knowing
- "Real" means "royal" - King Alfonso XIII granted the club its title and the crown on its crest in 1920.
- No club has won the European Cup / Champions League more times - the trophy room on the stadium tour simply doesn't end.
- The renovated Bernabéu has a retractable pitch: the grass is stored and lit in an underground greenhouse beneath the stadium, rolled out only for matches.
- FIFA named Real Madrid the Club of the 20th Century.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01Santiago Bernabéu metro station is closed for a full rebuild and line 10 is cut between Nuevos Ministerios and Cuzco until the end of 2026 - a free EMT replacement bus, the S10, runs instead and stops at the stadium itself. Arrive 60-90 minutes early for the security lines and the pre-match atmosphere.
- 02Stay around Sol or Gran Vía: you are within walking distance of everything, and the stadium is about 25-30 minutes away - line 10 to Nuevos Ministerios, then the free S10 bus, for as long as the line is cut.
- 03Spanish kick-offs are often late in the evening - eat like a local beforehand on Calle Ponzano, a famous tapas street a short ride from the ground, and buy your merchandise at the official club store beside the stadium.
