About the club
Stuttgart is Swabia's club, from the region that builds things - Mercedes-Benz has its headquarters in Untertürkheim and Porsche in Zuffenhausen, both inside the city boundary. The 1893 in the name belongs to FV Stuttgart; VfB itself was created on 2 April 1912, when that club merged with Kronen-Klub Cannstatt after talks that opened in the summer of 1911 at the Hotel Concordia in Bad Cannstatt. The white and red came from Cannstatt's own colours, and the three antlers of the House of Württemberg have stayed on the crest ever since. Five German championships followed - the last in 2007, the most dramatic in 1992, when Guido Buchwald headed the winner at Leverkusen on the final day while Eintracht Frankfurt were losing elsewhere - and in May 2025 a fourth German Cup was added. By July 2026 the membership had passed 135,000.
The ground is not downtown. It sits in the Neckarpark, two S-Bahn stops from the main station, on the Bad Cannstatt side of the river - Stuttgart's oldest borough, a Roman settlement by around AD 90, absorbed into the city only in 1904. The walk from the station is short, and what surrounds you is not a street of pubs but an events quarter on the bank of the Neckar: the Mercedes-Benz Museum about five minutes on foot from the turnstiles, the Porsche-Arena and the Hanns-Martin-Schleyer-Halle next door, the Cannstatter Wasen fairground right beside the ground. The pubs and cafes are in Cannstatt's old town, ten minutes' walk away around Wilhelmsplatz, and the vineyards - some 420 hectares still worked inside the city limits - climb the slopes above the valley. On match day the S1 leaves the main station full, which is also why extra trains are laid on the moment the whistle goes.
The stadium
The MHPArena - so named since 2023, before that the Mercedes-Benz Arena from 2008, the Gottlieb-Daimler-Stadion from 1993, and for forty-four years before that the Neckarstadion - opened in 1933 and now holds 60,058 for league matches. For decades it was an athletics bowl whose running track kept the crowd off the grass; only between 2009 and 2011 was the track dug out, the pitch lowered by 1.30 metres and the stands brought down to the touchline. Four sides enclose it: the Main Stand along Mercedesstraße, whose rebuild was completed in March 2024, the opposite stand facing it, and at the ends the Cannstatter Kurve, the ultras' end with 8,268 standing places, and the Untertürkheimer Kurve, whose corner holds the away support. On European nights the terrace is converted to seats and the capacity drops to 54,272. Take the S1 from the main station: eight minutes to NeckarPark (Mercedes-Benz), then five more on foot. Alternatively the U1 light rail runs to Mercedesstraße, and for big fixtures a special line, the U11, goes straight to NeckarPark.

Things to do in Stuttgart
Mercedes-Benz Museum
About five minutes' walk from the turnstiles, in UNStudio's double-helix building that opened on 19 May 2006: nine levels, 16,500 square metres of exhibition space and 160 vehicles among more than 1,500 exhibits, from the earliest motor cars of the late 19th century to the racing machines. Open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays.
Porsche Museum
In Zuffenhausen, beside the Porsche plant and right at the Neuwirtshaus (Porscheplatz) stop - nine minutes on the S6 or S60 from the main station. The Delugan Meissl building opened on 31 January 2009 and shows more than 80 cars. Open Tuesday to Sunday, closed Mondays.
Stuttgart TV Tower
The first tower in the world built of prestressed concrete, designed by the engineer Fritz Leonhardt, opened on 5 February 1956 and standing 216 metres tall. The observation deck is at 150 metres on the Hoher Bopser hill in Degerloch, and the U7 light rail reaches the Ruhbank (Fernsehturm) stop in about 11 minutes from the main station.
Markthalle market hall
An Art Nouveau market hall on Dorotheenstraße, opened in January 1914 to a design by Martin Elsässer: a curved glass roof carried on exposed concrete beams over a hall 60 metres long and 25 wide, without a single pillar in the middle, and beneath it dozens of stalls of cheese, spices, fish and bread alongside several restaurants. Open Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays.
Bad Cannstatt's mineral baths
Nineteen mineral springs run beneath Bad Cannstatt and neighbouring Berg, the second largest such field in Europe after Budapest, and eleven of them are recognised as healing springs. Two public baths are open today: Das Leuze on the Neckar in Berg and SoleBad Cannstatt by the Kurpark in Bad Cannstatt, within walking distance of the ground. Mineralbad Berg has been closed since May 2026 after flood damage and no reopening date has been set. After a cold evening kick-off, this is exactly the place.
Worth knowing
- The three antlers on the club crest are those of the House of Württemberg, and the same antlers - alongside Stuttgart's black horse - have made up the Porsche crest since 1952.
- The ground's attendance record was set on 22 November 1950, when Germany played their first post-war international here against Switzerland. The German FA recorded 96,400 spectators, but after a fence was breached the press at the time put the real crowd above 100,000.
- On 16 November 1977, against Switzerland, Klaus Fischer scored the overhead kick on this pitch that Germany later voted its Goal of the Century.
- Two European Cup finals were played on this grass: Real Madrid beat Stade de Reims 2-0 in 1959, and PSV Eindhoven beat Benfica on penalties in 1988.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01The match ticket doubles as a travel ticket: it is valid across the whole VVS network from seven hours before kick-off until 05:00 the next morning, so there is nothing else to buy. Going back, the NeckarPark platform jams the moment the whistle goes, and it is usually quicker to walk ten minutes to Bad Cannstatt station, where the S2 and S3 also stop and the U1 and U13 light rail run from Wilhelmsplatz next door.
- 02Away supporters get blocks 61 to 65 in the corner of the Untertürkheimer Kurve, with their own entrance off Benzstraße, and home fans wrap around them on both sides - outside that block, leave the away colours in the hotel. All the noise is at the opposite end, in the Cannstatter Kurve, and standing there means booking one of the 8,268 terrace places in advance.
- 03Bags bigger than A4 (297 by 210 by 150 millimetres) are turned away, bottles and cans are not allowed at all, and the lockers at the away entrance are few and run on a deposit system. At the kiosks some tills have gone card and phone only to cut the queues, but every kiosk keeps at least one till that still takes cash. And if your match falls between 25 September and 11 October 2026, the Cannstatter Volksfest is running on the Wasen right beside the ground - trains will be packed both ways, and the P10 car park on the Wasen, normally free to use, simply will not be there.
