About the club

Bayern Munich are German football royalty - the country's most decorated club by some distance, with more than 30 league titles and a trophy cabinet that includes multiple European crowns. Founded in 1900, the club carries Bavaria on its chest, and its motto, 'Mia san mia' - 'we are who we are' - sums up an institution built on swagger, high standards and relentless winning.

A trip to Munich for a Bayern match is one of European football's great weekends. The stadium

The Allianz Arena is one of world football's most recognisable grounds - a giant shell of almost 3,000 inflatable panels that glows red on Bayern nights and can be seen from far outside the city. Inside, roughly 75,000 fans sit steep and close to the pitch, the acoustics are superb, and the south end sets a drumbeat that carries the whole stadium from first whistle to last.

Things to do in Munich

Marienplatz & the Glockenspiel

Munich's central square, dominated by the spectacular neo-Gothic town hall. Stop by at 11am to watch the Glockenspiel clock and its dancing figures.

The English Garden

One of Europe's largest city parks - lawns, streams, beer gardens, and even surfers riding a standing river wave on the Eisbach all year round.

Viktualienmarkt

Munich's historic food market: cheese, sausage, fruit and pastry stalls with a beer garden at its heart. Perfect for a relaxed lunch between sights.

Olympiapark

The 1972 Olympic grounds, with their famous tent-like roofs and a tower looking out over the whole city - on clear days all the way to the Alps. Bayern played here before moving to the Allianz Arena.

Bavarian beer halls

The classic Munich experience: vast halls, long wooden tables, brass bands and hearty Bavarian food - giant pretzels, sausages and dumplings.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01Take the U6 underground line to Fröttmaning, then walk about 15 minutes along the esplanade. Leave early - the trains get seriously packed on match days.
  2. 02Stay central around Marienplatz - the U6 runs directly from there to the stadium, and everything else in the city is within walking distance.
  3. 03Buy your club gear at the Bayern stores in the city centre and skip the stadium queues; before kick-off, grab a warm pretzel and a Bavarian sausage.
