About the club
Newcastle United, founded in 1892, is the beating heart of a city that lives football like few places on earth. The black-and-white stripes earned the club its "Magpies" nickname, and the fans - the famous Toon Army - are counted among England's loudest and most loyal. There are four league titles and six FA Cups in the cabinet, but Newcastle's real greatness lies in the bond between one city and one team.
A visit here feels unlike any other football city: the stadium rises right in the city centre, a short stroll from the pubs, the river and your hotel, and on matchday the whole town turns black and white. Geordies welcome visitors with rare warmth, beer costs far less than in London, and the mix of a compact city break with one of England's most powerful atmospheres makes this a wonderfully easy trip.
The stadium
St James' Park is an English institution: the club's home since the nineteenth century, holding around 52,000 and sitting, almost uniquely, right in the heart of its city. From the upper tiers - among the tallest in the country - you get a dizzying view over the rooftops, and when the crowd finds its voice the concrete genuinely shakes. Even seasoned travellers leave stunned.

Things to do in Newcastle
The Quayside & the Tyne bridges
Newcastle's riverside promenade, framed by a line of bridges crowned by the iconic Tyne Bridge. On Sundays a lively market runs along the water.
Grey Street & Grainger Town
A sweeping nineteenth-century street often ranked among England's finest - Georgian architecture, cafes and the grand Theatre Royal.
BALTIC & the Millennium Bridge
A contemporary-art gallery inside an old flour mill across the river, with free entry and a rooftop viewpoint over the city. Cross via the graceful tilting Millennium Bridge.
The Angel of the North
The colossal steel figure that greets arrivals to the region - around 20 metres tall with a wingspan of some 54 metres. A short ride from town and an essential photo.
Gallowgate & The Strawberry on matchday
The historic pub beside the ground and the streets around it are where fans gather - singing, striped shirts and local pride on every corner.
Worth knowing
- Football has been played at St James' Park since the 1880s - and the ground sits right in the heart of the city, a rarity in the modern game.
- The club anthem is "Blaydon Races", a nineteenth-century Geordie folk song still belted out from the stands today.
- "Toon" is simply how "town" sounds in the local Geordie accent - hence the famous Toon Army.
- Outside the stadium stands a statue of Alan Shearer, the local boy who became the Premier League's record goalscorer.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01You won't need transport: the ground is a 10-15 minute walk from Central Station and most hotels - stay in the city centre and do everything on foot.
- 02Arrive on the morning of the match: the pub build-up around Grainger Town and the Quayside is half the experience, and grab a stottie or a Greggs pastry on the way - the bakery chain was born in Newcastle.
- 03If your seats are in the upper tier, brace yourself for a serious climb - the reward is one of the best city views any stadium can offer.
