About the club
Manchester United may be the most famous name in world football: a club founded in 1878 by railway workers as Newton Heath, which grew into an empire of dozens of trophies, European Cups, and generations of players who became legends - from Bobby Charlton and George Best to the Class of '92. The stadium
Old Trafford, United's home since 1910, is the biggest club ground in England, holding around 74,000. Bobby Charlton nicknamed it the 'Theatre of Dreams', and on big nights it's easy to see why: a vast sea of red, the Stretford End leading the singing, and history in every corner - from the statues outside to the names woven into the stands.

Worth knowing
- The club was born in 1878 as Newton Heath, a team of railway workers - and only became Manchester United in 1902, after nearly going bankrupt and being rescued at the last moment.
- The nickname 'Theatre of Dreams' was coined by Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest players in the club's history.
- United were the first English club to play in the European Cup, in 1956 - defying the football authorities of the day and paving the way for every English side since.
- The 'Holy Trinity' statue of Best, Law and Charlton stands outside the ground, gazing across Sir Matt Busby Way at the statue of the manager who built the modern United.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01Old Trafford sits outside the city centre: take the Metrolink tram to Old Trafford or Wharfside, or walk it in about 45 minutes along the water. Trams are packed after the match - consider waiting a while or walking a stop.
- 02Arrive 90 minutes early: time for the megastore, photos by the statues, and chips from the match-day vans on Sir Matt Busby Way.
- 03Stay in central Manchester - around Deansgate or the Northern Quarter - rather than near the stadium; there's not much to do by the ground in the evening.
