About the club
Bayer Leverkusen are one of German football's great institutions, with a story unlike anyone else's: the club was founded in 1904 by workers at the Bayer pharmaceutical factory - the aspirin company - which is why they are nicknamed the 'Werkself', the works eleven. For decades they have been a fixture at the top of the Bundesliga, known for slick, technical, attacking football and for producing wonderful players.
A Leverkusen trip is the connoisseur's German football weekend. The BayArena is compact and intense, tickets are easier to come by than at the giants, and you are perfectly placed on the Rhine: Cologne's cathedral and old town are a short train ride away, Düsseldorf not much further. Top-flight football plus two great cities to explore - that is rare value for a few days away.
The stadium
The BayArena holds around 30,000, and that is exactly its charm: it is one of the Bundesliga's most intimate top-flight grounds, with a roof over every seat, steep stands and sightlines that put you almost on the touchline. It is loud without being overwhelming, genuinely family-friendly, and one of the few elite grounds where you see every tackle and hear every shout up close.

Things to do in Leverkusen
The Japanese Garden
A tranquil green gem - red bridges, koi ponds and tea pavilions. One of the loveliest Japanese gardens in Germany, and perfect for a quiet hour.
Schloss Morsbroich
A baroque palace surrounded by handsome grounds, today a home for modern art. A surprising blend of history and contemporary culture.
Neuland-Park on the Rhine
A spacious park on the banks of the Rhine - lawns, playgrounds and a riverside promenade. Ideal for families, and for a slow morning before an evening game.
A day in Cologne
Fifteen minutes or so by train and you are in Cologne: the mighty cathedral, the old town, the Rhine promenade and the Kölsch taverns. There is no reason not to combine the two.
Düsseldorf's old town
A short train ride the other way - Düsseldorf's old town, its lanes packed with hundreds of taverns and restaurants side by side, plus a beautiful Rhine promenade.
Worth knowing
- The club was founded in 1904 by workers at the Bayer factory - the company that invented aspirin - hence the nickname 'Werkself', the works eleven.
- The city's giant illuminated Bayer Cross is one of the largest illuminated advertising signs in the world.
- The city itself is named after a chemist - Carl Leverkus, who built the works around which the whole town grew.
- The club crest incorporates the Bayer cross - the same emblem printed on aspirin packets all over the world.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01Base yourselves in Cologne: frequent trains reach Leverkusen Mitte in about fifteen minutes, and from there it is a short walk to the BayArena.
- 02It is a compact ground and the gates fill up quickly - arrive about an hour before kick-off, with time for a hot sausage near the stadium.
- 03The official club store at the stadium has all the shirts and souvenirs; after the game, finish the evening in Cologne's old town with a glass of local Kölsch.
