About the club

Barcelona is "més que un club" - more than a club - and it is not just a slogan. Founded in 1899 after Swiss businessman Joan Gamper placed a newspaper advert looking for players, Barça became the sporting symbol of Catalonia: a club owned by its own members, famous for a style of football built on touch, movement and homegrown talent from the La Masia academy.

Visiting Barça means visiting one of the world's most complete cities: Gaudí's architecture, a beach, markets, and food at every level. On match day the streets around Camp Nou fill with flags and families, the anthem rolls around the giant bowl, and on big nights card mosaics turn the stands into artwork. It is a football trip you can sell to anyone - fan or not.

The stadium

Camp Nou started hosting matches again in November 2025 and is still mid-rebuild, opening in phases: about 62,652 seats are in use today, out of the roughly 105,000 the finished ground will hold in 2027. The third tier is still closed, so every seat is lower and closer to the pitch than it used to be; and when the whole crowd sings the club anthem before kick-off, the hairs on your arms will stand up.

Things to do in Barcelona

Sagrada Família

Gaudí's unfinished basilica is the most astonishing building you will ever step into. Book tickets online well in advance - they sell out.

The Gothic Quarter & La Boqueria

Medieval lanes, hidden squares, and just off La Rambla the Boqueria market - fresh juices, jamón and seafood counters.

Park Güell

Gaudí again: a hilltop park of mosaic dragons and curving benches, with sweeping views over the city and the sea.

Barceloneta Beach

A city beach ten minutes from the old town. Swim, walk the seafront, then eat paella or fresh seafood at one of the beachfront restaurants.

Pintxos on Carrer de Blai

The Poble Sec street where locals hop between bars grabbing pintxos - small skewered bites priced for snacking. Cheap, fun, delicious.

  • The club is owned by its members - more than 100,000 "socis" who elect the president - not by a single wealthy owner.
  • Camp Nou was Europe's largest stadium for decades, and when the rebuild is finished - around 105,000 seats - it will be again; for now it is reopening in phases, with about 62,652 seats in use.
  • Before every home match the crowd sings the "Cant del Barça", and the motto "més que un club" is written across the stands in giant letters.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01The metro gets you to Camp Nou easily - Palau Reial or Collblanc stations - about 20-25 minutes from the city centre. Arrive early: even at the current capacity tens of thousands of people move slowly, and which gates are open changes with each phase of the works - check the gate number on your ticket.
  2. 02Stay in the Eixample or the Gothic Quarter: central, walkable, and full of restaurants for a late post-match dinner.
  3. 03Book the big sights - Sagrada Família, Park Güell - online days ahead, and buy your merchandise at the official club megastore rather than the street stalls.
