About the club
Roma were founded in 1927 through a merger of three city clubs, with one declared goal: to unite the city behind a single great team. The colours - deep red and golden yellow - were taken straight from the city's crest, and the she-wolf of Roman legend still sits on the badge. This is a club that is pure identity: neighbourhood-rooted, proud and emotional, with loyalty passed from father to son for nearly a century.
A Roma match at the Olimpico is genuine theatre: the Curva Sud sings without pause, Antonello Venditti's anthem is belted out spine-tinglingly just before kick-off, and every goal shakes the stands. Outside the stadium, Rome itself awaits - the Colosseum, the piazzas, the pasta. An eternal city with a team that is a local religion. A combination almost impossible to find anywhere else.
The stadium
The Stadio Olimpico sits between the River Tiber and Monte Mario hill, at the heart of the Foro Italico sports complex. Around 70,000 seats, a roof covering every stand, and an athletics track between crowd and grass - but don't worry: the Curva Sud, home of the Roma faithful, generates an atmosphere that crosses any distance. On big nights the place simply shakes.

The Colosseum and Roman Forum
Rome's original stadium, nearly two thousand years old. Book tickets ahead and give it half a day - the Forum beside it is a walk through history itself.
Testaccio - where Roma was born
The neighbourhood where Roma played their earliest years is today a culinary heaven: a buzzing market, trattorias serving true Roman cooking, and a working-class soul that bleeds for the team.
Trastevere by night
Cobbled lanes, ivy on the walls and tables spilling into the street. The place for a long Roman dinner after a day on your feet.
The Pantheon and Piazza Navona
A short walk in the historic centre links the perfectly preserved ancient temple with the city's most beautiful baroque square. Stop for gelato on the way - non-negotiable.
Villa Borghese
Rome's great green park: bike rentals, a little boating lake and the Pincio terrace overlooking the rooftops. Perfect for a relaxed morning with kids.

Tips for the travelling fan
- 01There's no metro by the stadium: take line 2 from Piazzale Flaminio (by Piazza del Popolo) to the end of the line, then a short walk across the Tiber. Line 2 normally runs as a tram, but while Rome's tram network is under repair it runs as a replacement bus on the same route - check the line before you set off.
- 02Arrive ninety minutes early - there are several security rings around the ground - and bring your passport: tickets in Italy are personal and checked against ID.
- 03Before the game join the fans in the bars of Ponte Milvio - and after the whistle, let the crowds thin out over a drink rather than squeezing onto packed transport.
