About the club

Arsenal are an institution of English football - founded in 1886 by munitions workers in Woolwich and rooted in north London since 1913. With a long list of league titles and FA Cups, plus the legendary 'Invincibles' season of 2003/04, the club built an identity all its own: elegant, attacking, easy-on-the-eye football. The North London derby against Tottenham remains one of the fiercest and oldest rivalries in the English game.

Visiting Arsenal means experiencing big-time football inside real, everyday London. You step off the Tube into quiet residential streets, join thousands of fans on the short walk to the ground, and feel how an entire neighbourhood lives and breathes its club. Afterwards, the pubs of Holloway Road and the restaurants of Islington's Upper Street are waiting - and central London, with everything it offers, is barely fifteen minutes away.

The stadium

The Emirates, Arsenal's home since 2006, is one of England's most impressive grounds - a sleek modern bowl of around 60,000 seats with flawless sightlines. Statues of club legends ring the outside and the club's history is woven into the facades, while inside, steep tiers keep the crowd close to the pitch. Even from the upper tier you see everything, and on big nights the place truly roars.

Things to do in London

Islington & Upper Street

Arsenal's home turf: a long stretch of restaurants, cafés and pubs an easy walk from the stadium - perfect for a meal before or after the match.

Highbury Square

Arsenal's beloved old ground is now housing, but the original Art Deco facade still stands. A short, moving stop for football romantics, five minutes' walk from the Emirates.

Camden Market

One of the world's most famous markets: street food from everywhere, vintage shops and canal-side colour. A short hop from the Arsenal area.

The South Bank

A riverside walk taking in the London Eye, Borough Market's food stalls and Tate Modern - a full day of classic London, a quick Tube ride away.

Emirates Stadium Tour & Museum

Go behind the scenes in the dressing rooms and players' tunnel, then browse a museum full of trophies and iconic moments. Best done the day before the match.

Worth knowing

  • The 2003/04 'Invincibles' went the entire league season unbeaten - and Arsenal were awarded a unique golden trophy for it. No other club has managed it in the modern era.
  • Arsenal were founded by workers at a royal munitions factory - hence the nickname 'the Gunners' and the cannon that still sits on the crest.
  • Arsenal station is the only London Underground stop named after a football club - legendary manager Herbert Chapman persuaded the railway to rename it from 'Gillespie Road' in 1932.
  • Arsenal hold the longest unbroken run in England's top division - they have played there continuously since 1919.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01Easiest route: the Piccadilly line to Arsenal station, five minutes' walk from the ground, or the Victoria line to Highbury & Islington if you fancy walking in with the crowds. Don't drive - there's no match-day parking.
  2. 02Arrive 60-90 minutes before kick-off: enough time for the statues around the stadium, the club megastore, and the buzz in the surrounding streets.
  3. 03Stay in Islington or around King's Cross - a short ride from both the stadium and central London - and eat on Upper Street before the match rather than at the stadium kiosks.
