About the club
West Ham United began life in 1895 as the works team of the Thames Ironworks shipyard - hence the crossed hammers on the badge and the "Hammers" nickname. This is a proud working-class club, famous for its "Academy of Football" that raised some of England's greatest players. Three FA Cups and European silverware sit in the cabinet, but the club's true wealth is its identity: tough, local and full of East End humour.
A West Ham matchday is a journey into the real East End: soap bubbles drift through the air as tens of thousands sing "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles", the anthem that has followed the club for a century. The former Olympic Stadium sits in a green, landscaped park a short ride from central London, and pairing a rousing matchday with everything the city offers makes this a classic football break.
The stadium
The London Stadium was built for the 2012 Olympics and became West Ham's home in 2016. With roughly 62,500 seats it is one of England's biggest grounds, and its sweeping curves and vast roof give it the feel of a great arena. The stands sit a touch further from the pitch than at a classic football ground, but when the bubbles rise and the anthem plays, the hairs on your neck will stand up.

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
The 2012 Olympic park - waterways, trails and the ArcelorMittal Orbit tower with its giddy slide. Great for families and for the hours before the game.
Westfield Stratford City
One of Europe's biggest shopping centres, right by Stratford station - dozens of restaurants and shops, and the easiest pre-match meal around.

The real East End: street art, vintage markets, curry houses and salt-beef beigels from bakeries that stay open into the small hours.

A thousand years of history, the Crown Jewels and the world's most famous bridge - a short ride from Stratford and perfect for families.

The dish East London is built on: meat pie, mash and green parsley liquor. Find one of the old-school shops - this is the original fans' lunch.
Worth knowing

- Before every home game real soap bubbles float over the stands while the crowd sings the club's 1920s music-hall anthem.
- Every England goal in the 1966 World Cup final was scored by a West Ham player, and the captain who lifted the trophy was a Hammer too - which is why fans insist West Ham won the World Cup.
- The London Stadium hosted the 2012 Olympics - Usain Bolt sprinted to gold on this very site before it became a football ground.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01Get to Stratford station (Tube, Elizabeth line, DLR and rail), then it's a 20-minute walk through the Olympic Park. The station gets very busy after the final whistle - don't plan anything tight.
- 02Come early and eat at Westfield next to the station - endless family-friendly options - or go full East End with traditional pie and mash.
- 03Don't miss the bubbles: be in your seat fifteen minutes before kick-off for one of English football's most photographed moments.
