About the club
Fenerbahçe were founded in 1907 in Kadıköy, on the Asian side of Istanbul, at a time when the Ottoman authorities took a dim view of Turks playing football - so the club spent its first year operating more or less underground. The name means 'lighthouse garden', after the lighthouse at the tip of the district, and the colours are yellow and navy blue. The Yellow Canaries have since collected 19 Süper Lig titles - the most recent in 2014 - and seven Turkish Cups, but the football team has never won a UEFA competition - the club's big European titles came in basketball instead: the EuroLeague in 2017 and again in 2025.
The difference between Istanbul's three clubs starts with geography. Galatasaray play at the northern edge of the European side, Beşiktaş sit on the Bosphorus in the middle of the city, and Fenerbahçe are across the water - in a dense, working neighbourhood that carries on as normal on a match day. Getting there is half the point: a ferry from the European shore, twenty minutes on the water, then a walk through the Kadıköy market among tens of thousands of people in yellow and navy. This crowd has been waiting more than a decade for a league title, and you can hear it.
The stadium
The Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Kadıköy - carrying the sponsor's name Chobani Stadium since the 2025/26 season - has been Fenerbahçe's home since 1908. About 47,911 seats in a tight four-stand two-tier bowl, no running track and a roof over every seat. In Turkey people simply say "Kadıköy".

Things to do in Istanbul
Kadıköy market
About twenty minutes' walk from the ground: lanes of fish, cheese and spice stalls that turn in the evening into a street of meyhanes - Turkish taverns serving rakı and meze.
Moda & the seafront
The quarter south of the market, with a promenade along the Sea of Marmara, tea gardens facing the Princes' Islands and a nostalgic tram looping around it. The place to be at sunset.
Bahariye Caddesi
Kadıköy's main pedestrian street, just off the route from the ferry to the ground: record shops, second-hand books, cafés and graffiti along the whole length of it.
Fenerbahçe Museum & stadium tour
The trophy hall and a behind-the-scenes tour of the dressing rooms, tunnel and pitch, entered from Bağdat Caddesi. Note: it closes on match day and on the day before.
Worth knowing
- The meeting with Galatasaray is known as the Intercontinental Derby: Fenerbahçe from the Asian side of Istanbul, Galatasaray from the European. They first played each other in 1909.
- In September 2011, with the club under punishment and men barred from attending, Fenerbahçe gave free tickets to women and children - more than 41,000 filled the stands, and players from both teams threw flowers into the stands before kick-off.
- Fenerbahçe once went 47 consecutive home matches unbeaten at Kadıköy, a run that was only broken in October 2012.
- The stadium hosted the 2009 UEFA Cup final - the last final in the competition's history before it became the Europa League.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01Every spectator aged 7 and up needs the Turkish fan card - the Passolig, now called Passo Taraftar. Foreign visitors register with a passport on the app or at passotaraftar.com.tr, and no physical card is needed: the QR code in the app opens the turnstile. Sort it out before you fly, not on the night.
- 02Kuzey, the north stand, is where away supporters are put - avoid it. Güney at the south end belongs to Genç Fenerbahçeliler, the ultras: the cheapest and loudest part of the ground, but everyone stands for the full ninety. For a first visit take Maraton or Fenerium along the touchlines - and on a derby day, a neutral does not wear the other club's colours, not even in the street.
- 03The Marmaray or the metrobüs to Söğütlüçeşme station, then a five- to ten-minute walk. The nicer way: a ferry from Eminönü, Karaköy or Kabataş to the Kadıköy pier, about twenty minutes on the water, then a two-kilometre walk through the market. Don't bother with a car - there is no parking.
- 04Süper Lig kick-off times are set close to the date and can move, so don't book flights around a provisional date alone. Arrive 60-90 minutes before kick-off, because the security checks at the gates are slow - and for a derby against Galatasaray or Beşiktaş, whether away fans are admitted at all is decided match by match.
