About the club

Galatasaray were founded in 1905 in a classroom at Galatasaray High School in Beyoğlu, by students led by Ali Sami Yen who wanted a Turkish club capable of beating the foreign sides then playing in Istanbul. They have been the country's most decorated club ever since: 26 Süper Lig titles, more than any other club, four of them in a row up to 2025/26. In the spring of 2000 they beat Arsenal on penalties in Copenhagen to lift the UEFA Cup, and in August added the European Super Cup against Real Madrid - still the only European trophies any Turkish club has won.

Unlike its two great rivals, Galatasaray does not play in the middle of the city. RAMS Park sits in Seyrantepe, about 12km north of the centre, among office towers and beside a motorway - no Bosphorus, no old streets, just a short metro spur built for the stadium. From the station you walk up the Aslanlı Yol, the approach avenue, and from there it is one stream of flags, drums and the smell of simit. Fenerbahçe gives you a neighbourhood, Beşiktaş gives you a view; Galatasaray gives you the biggest and loudest crowd of the three.

The stadium

RAMS Park - officially the Ali Sami Yen Sports Complex, named after the club's founder - opened in 2011 to replace the old ground in Mecidiyeköy. Around 53,000 seats are set into a hillside named Aslantepe, the Lion's Hill, beneath a roof that traps the noise and sends it back down at the pitch. ultrAslan stand behind the north goal for the full ninety; away supporters, when there are any, get a corner of the south stand. On the roof, 10,404 solar panels generate around 4.2MW - a Guinness record for the most powerful solar-powered stadium.

Things to do in Istanbul

Aslanlı Yol & the club museum

The approach avenue that runs from the metro up to the ground: cafés, tea and simit stalls and the megastore. The club museum inside the complex holds the 2000 UEFA Cup, but closes on Mondays and on home matchdays - save it for a spare afternoon.

Vadistanbul

One stop on the F3 funicular from Seyrantepe: a valley of shops and restaurants. A comfortable place to eat before kick-off without the crush on the Aslanlı Yol - and to sit out the queue for the metro afterwards.

Emirgan & Rumeli Hisarı

Emirgan park and the Sabancı Museum, plus the fifteenth-century Rumeli Hisarı fortress - all in Sarıyer, the same district as the stadium but down on the Bosphorus. From there you can walk south along the water to Bebek.

Galatasaray High School & İstiklal Caddesi

Where the club was born in 1905. The school's green-and-gold gates stand halfway along İstiklal, Istanbul's busiest pedestrian street, with the red tram and the eating alleys of Beyoğlu all around. The same M2 line that serves the stadium stops at either end of it, Şişhane and Taksim.

Worth knowing

  • On 17 May 2000 Galatasaray beat Arsenal in the UEFA Cup final in Copenhagen, 0-0 and 4-1 on penalties, then took the European Super Cup off Real Madrid in August with a golden goal. They remain the only Turkish club to have won a European trophy.
  • The club was founded in 1905 by pupils of Galatasaray High School in Beyoğlu, led by Ali Sami Yen - and the ground's official name is still the Ali Sami Yen Sports Complex. RAMS Park is only the sponsor's name.
  • 26 Turkish league titles, a national record, including four in a row, the last of them in 2025/26.
  • 'Welcome to Hell' - the banner that greeted Manchester United's players at the old stadium in 1993 - stuck to this crowd as a nickname, and moved with them to the new ground.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01Every spectator in Turkey needs a personal fan card to get through the turnstiles - Passolig, now rebranded Passo Taraftar. Visitors apply online in English with a passport and a photo, and for anyone who is not a Turkish citizen the prepaid Passo Taraftar Wallet card is the only option. Registration itself is free, but the club charges an annual fee for the e-ticketing system. It takes days rather than hours: sort it before you fly, and bring the passport itself to the gate.
  2. 02ultrAslan stand behind the north goal for the whole match - loud, spectacular, and you will barely watch any football. The away section sits in the south stand. For a first visit take the lower tier of a side stand, east (Doğu) or west (Batı).
  3. 03Tickets for ordinary league matches go on general sale about a week before, and the members' sale opens roughly two days ahead of that - for the matches people want, everything is gone by then. Do not plan on buying at the box office on the day, and certainly not for a big game.
  4. 04Take the metro: M2 to Sanayi Mahallesi, then change to the short shuttle to Seyrantepe, directly opposite the ground. Come about two hours early - the searches at the gates are slow and the queues build fast; after the final whistle you either queue a long time for the metro or stay in your seat another twenty minutes. Driving is not worth it.
  5. 05For the derbies against Fenerbahçe or against Beşiktaş the whole ground is yellow and red: Istanbul's big derbies are usually played without any away support, and tickets barely reach open sale. As a neutral it is a remarkable thing to see, but don't wear the rival's colours and don't get drawn into arguments in the streets around the stadium. An ordinary league night gives you the same noise without the edge.
