About the club

Benfica are less a football club than a national institution. Founded in 1904, they have collected more than 35 Portuguese league titles, won back-to-back European Cups in the early 1960s, and gave the world the legendary Eusébio. The Eagles wear red, attack by tradition, and command one of the largest and most devoted fanbases in football - in Portugal it is often said that half the country supports them.

A match weekend in Lisbon is a gift. Spend the day drifting between hills, trams and pastel de nata, then join the red river flowing toward the Estádio da Luz. Moments before kick-off, the eagle Vitória circles the stands and lands on the club crest while some 68,000 people roar as one. Even visitors who arrive without a red shirt leave with a story they will tell for years.

The stadium

The Estádio da Luz - the 'Stadium of Light' - was rebuilt for Euro 2004 and has since hosted that tournament's final plus two Champions League finals. Around 68,000 red seats sit beneath elegant steel arches and a roof that traps the noise and hurls it back at the pitch. When the crowd sings the club anthem before kick-off, you understand why players speak of this place with awe.

Things to do in Lisbon

Belém

Jerónimos Monastery, the Belém Tower and the original Pastéis de Belém bakery. Eat the custard tart warm, dusted with cinnamon - not to be missed.

Alfama & Fado

Lisbon's oldest quarter: winding alleys, laundry on the line and viewpoints over the river. Book an evening of live fado over dinner - the music that is the city's soul.

Time Out Market

A vast food hall at Cais do Sodré gathering dozens of stalls from Lisbon's best chefs and restaurants under one roof. Perfect when everyone in the group wants something different.

Bairro Alto viewpoints

Catch sunset at the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, then wander down into Bairro Alto's lanes - a neighbourhood that comes alive at night with tiny bars and good food.

Lisbon Oceanarium

One of Europe's largest aquariums, in the riverside Parque das Nações. A perfect half-day with kids - and adults walk out just as enchanted.

  • Before every home game the eagle Vitória circles the stands and lands on the club crest - one of European football's most famous pre-match rituals.
  • Benfica entered the Guinness World Records as the football club with the most registered members in the world.
  • In the 1962 European Cup final, Benfica beat Real Madrid 5-3 with two goals from Eusébio - whose statue now greets you outside the stadium.
  • The Estádio da Luz hosted the Euro 2004 final and two Champions League finals, in 2014 and 2020.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01Take the metro: the blue line to Colégio Militar/Luz or Alto dos Moinhos gets you there in about fifteen minutes from the centre - skip the parking headache entirely.
  2. 02Arrive around two hours early: the club museum (Museu Benfica - Cosme Damião) and the official megastore sit right by the stadium, and you'll be in your seat in time for the eagle's flight.
  3. 03Hungry? Colombo, one of Iberia's biggest shopping centres, is directly opposite the stadium - a huge food court for the pre-match meal. Save the celebratory dinner for Bairro Alto afterwards.
