About the club
FC Porto - the Dragons - are Portuguese football's great European success story of recent decades: champions of Europe twice, in 1987 and 2004, with UEFA Cup and Europa League triumphs alongside. Since 1893 the club has gathered 31 league titles and perfected a famous model - find raw talent, turn it into stars, sell to Europe's giants, then win again with the next generation. Pride, stubbornness and a cabinet full of silver.
Porto the city is a discovery in its own right: bridges over the Douro, houses tiled in azulejos, port wine lodges and granite alleyways. Wander the Ribeira by day, raise a glass across the river in Gaia, then join the blue-and-white tide flowing toward the Dragão at night. A compact city, wonderful food and a boiling stadium - a football-and-wine weekend that is very hard to beat.
The stadium
The Estádio do Dragão opened in 2003 and staged the opening match of Euro 2004. Around 50,000 blue seats, sleek lines of steel and glass, and acoustics that turn every chant from the end behind the goal into rolling thunder. This is a ground built for big European nights - and when the blue-and-white scarves go up before kick-off, you know exactly why you came.

Things to do in Porto
Ribeira
The colourful riverside quarter on the Douro, a World Heritage site: painted houses, waterfront cafés and ancient stepped alleys. The place to start every Porto morning.
Gaia wine lodges
Walk across the Dom Luís I bridge, designed by a partner of Gustave Eiffel, to Vila Nova de Gaia - port wine tastings in historic cellars with sweeping river views.
Livraria Lello & Clérigos Tower
One of the world's most beautiful bookshops, with its famous crimson staircase, and the nearby Clérigos Tower - climb it for the best view over the city.
The Francesinha
Porto's legendary sandwich: layers of meat under a blanket of melted cheese and a spicy beer sauce, with chips and often a fried egg on top. A must-do local experience - sharing is allowed.
Foz do Douro
Where the river meets the Atlantic: a promenade, a lighthouse, beaches and cafés. Ride the historic No. 1 tram along the river to get there - lovely with kids too.
Worth knowing
- Lionel Messi's first appearance for Barcelona's senior side happened right here - in the friendly that inaugurated the Dragão in 2003.
- The 1987 European Cup final was decided by Rabah Madjer's famous backheel - and in Portugal a backheel is still commonly called a 'Madjer' to this day.
- The city gave its name to the whole country - ancient 'Portus Cale' eventually became 'Portugal' - as well as to its famous port wine.
- The Dragão hosted the 2021 Champions League final - so you'll be sitting in a stadium where Europe's biggest prize was decided.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01The metro stops right outside: Estádio do Dragão station serves several lines straight from the city centre. Platforms are packed after the final whistle - browse the club store for fifteen minutes and let the crowd thin out.
- 02Set aside time for the FC Porto museum and stadium tour next to the Dragão - on match days check opening hours in advance, and be at the ground at least ninety minutes before kick-off.
- 03Stay in Baixa or Ribeira - the centre is a short metro ride from the stadium. A pre-match francesinha is a tradition, but be warned it's a calorie bomb; the seafood restaurants of Matosinhos are the lighter alternative.
