About the club
Sporting CP - the Lions in green and white hoops - have been one of Portugal's giants since 1906: more than 20 league titles, the 1964 European Cup Winners' Cup, and above all the most celebrated academy in the country. Cristiano Ronaldo, Luís Figo and a long line of stars took their first footballing steps here. This is a club with a clear identity: raise young players, trust them, and play with your head held high.
A match at Alvalade is a wonderful way to meet Lisbon's green half. Arrive early, share a coffee with locals wrapped in green scarves, then step into a stadium whose multicoloured seats look like a giant mosaic. When the stand behind the goal starts singing, you realise Lisbon is not just a city of viewpoints - it is a football city. And downtown? Fifteen minutes away by metro.
The stadium
The José Alvalade, rebuilt for Euro 2004, is named after one of the club's founders. Its roughly 52,700 seats come in a famous riot of colours - the stadium's trademark - making the bowl feel alive even before it fills. The green crowd sits close to the pitch, the stand behind the goal sings without pause, and the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, families included.

Things to do in Lisbon
Baixa & Praça do Comércio
The grand riverfront square that was Lisbon's historic gateway, and the cobbled streets of downtown behind it. Start here, pass under the Rua Augusta arch, and let the city lead the way.
Chiado & Santa Justa Lift
The quarter of historic cafés and bookshops - including Bertrand, one of the oldest in the world - beside the famous iron Santa Justa lift and its rooftop view of the city.
Tram 28
The classic yellow tram climbing and winding through Graça and Alfama. Board early in the morning to snag a seat - it's the most charming way to see the old town.
LX Factory
A former industrial complex under the 25 de Abril bridge turned creative hub: street art, independent shops, brunch spots and restaurants. Great for a relaxed afternoon before a match evening.
Parque das Nações
Lisbon's modern riverside district: a cable car, a long promenade, a science museum and plenty for kids. Flat and easy-going - the obvious choice for families wanting a relaxed day.
Worth knowing
- Sporting's academy produced both Cristiano Ronaldo and Luís Figo - two Ballon d'Or winners raised by the same club.
- Alvalade's multicoloured seats are a global trademark - a mosaic of colour that has made the stadium one of Europe's most photographed and recognisable.
- On the way to winning the 1964 European Cup Winners' Cup, Sporting beat APOEL Nicosia 16-1 - one of the biggest wins ever recorded in a major European competition.
- Sporting is a true multi-sport club: Carlos Lopes, who represented the club in athletics, won the 1984 Olympic marathon - Portugal's first ever Olympic gold medal.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01Take the metro to Campo Grande (green and yellow lines) - the stadium is a few minutes' walk from the station and about fifteen minutes from downtown. There is no reason to drive.
- 02Come an hour or two early: the club museum and the big green store are part of the stadium complex, and the kiosks and cafés around Campo Grande are perfect for a pre-match beer and a bifana sandwich.
- 03For the Lisbon derby against Benfica, demand is enormous - book tickets as far ahead as you can and reach the gates with time to spare for security checks. For a regular match you can relax, but don't be late.
