About the club

Paris Saint-Germain is the youngest of Europe's giants - founded only in 1970 - yet within a few decades it grew into a global footballing power and a symbol of the French capital itself. The club is known for attacking, star-driven football, for navy-and-red shirts that became a fashion item, and for a trophy room stacked with French league titles. The Eiffel Tower on the crest says it all: this is the club of the City of Light.

A PSG match slots perfectly into a Paris break: museums and riverside cafés in the morning, then a short métro ride to Porte de Saint-Cloud to join the stream of fans walking to the ground. Inside, the atmosphere - especially in the ultras' ends behind the goals - is louder, more colourful and more intense than you'd expect from such an elegant city. Big-city glamour plus big-match noise is exactly why this trip is worth making.

The stadium

The Parc des Princes is a compact, boiling bowl of around 48,000 seats on the south-western edge of Paris. Its curved concrete ribs, built in the early 1970s, trap the noise inside - songs roll across the pitch with a force that belies the ground's size. The stands are steep and close to the grass, and the two ultras' ends trade chants with each other for the full ninety minutes.

Things to do in Paris

Eiffel Tower & Trocadéro

No first visit to Paris is complete without it: go up for the view or simply settle on the Trocadéro esplanade opposite. After dark the tower sparkles at the top of every hour - worth waiting for.

The Louvre & Tuileries Gardens

The world's largest art museum deserves at least half a day, and even if you skip the galleries, the pyramid courtyard and the stroll through the Tuileries to Place de la Concorde are a joy.

Montmartre & Sacré-Cœur

The painters' quarter on the hill: lanes, cafés, the artists' square and the white basilica with one of the best views over the city. Loveliest towards sunset.

Le Marais & Rue des Rosiers

Paris's historic Jewish quarter - famous falafel, bakeries, boutiques and galleries. For Israeli fans it's also a taste of home, with kosher options around Rue des Rosiers.

A cruise on the Seine

An hour on the water past all the Paris icons - Notre-Dame, the Musée d'Orsay, the bridges. A winner with families, and magical after dark when the city lights up.

Worth knowing

  • Paris's ring road, the Périphérique, runs directly beneath the ground - the Parc des Princes pitch sits above a busy motorway tunnel.
  • The crest hides royal history: beneath the Eiffel Tower sits a cradle - a nod to King Louis XIV, who was born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.
  • PSG was only founded in 1970, helped by a public subscription of thousands of Parisians who wanted the capital to have a big club - making it the youngest of Europe's giants.
  • Before the Stade de France was built, the Parc des Princes served as France's national stadium - the legendary Euro 1984 final was played here.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01Take the métro: line 9 to Porte de Saint-Cloud or line 10 to Porte d'Auteuil, then a short walk. Leave early - security checks take time, and you'll want to be in your seat half an hour before kick-off.
  2. 02The area around the ground (the 16th arrondissement) is quiet and residential - eat in the city before the match rather than counting on restaurants near the gates.
  3. 03For shirts and souvenirs, hit the club's flagship store on the Champs-Élysées or the stadium megastore - the Champs-Élysées branch doubles as sightseeing and usually has shorter queues.
