About the club
AS Monaco is one of European football's most unusual stories: a club from a tiny principality on the French Riviera that has competed - and won - in the French league for decades. Since its founding in 1924 it has collected championships and cups, raised generation after generation of young talents who went on to conquer Europe, and its diagonal red-and-white shirt is among the most recognisable on the continent. Small in size, giant in history.
A match trip to Monaco is like nothing else: a stadium a few steps from the Mediterranean, a principality you can cross on foot, yachts, a princely palace and promenades with full Riviera views. Tickets are relatively easy to come by compared with other big clubs, the atmosphere is relaxed and family-friendly, and Nice, Menton and the whole Côte d'Azur are on the doorstep. A football holiday that feels like a Mediterranean dream.
The stadium
The Stade Louis II, opened in 1985 in the Fontvieille district - a neighbourhood built on land reclaimed from the sea - is one of Europe's most distinctive grounds: only around 16,900 seats, nine famous arches at one end that became a symbol of Monaco, and a whole sports complex beneath it. With the pitch close, the sea around the corner and a relaxed crowd, it makes for a wonderfully easy-going matchday.

Things to do in Monaco
The Rock & Monaco-Ville
The old town perched on the Rock: narrow lanes, the cathedral, the Prince's Palace and the daily changing of the guard late morning. The views over the harbour are worth the climb.
The Oceanographic Museum
One of the world's most famous sea museums and aquariums, in a grand building built into a cliff above the water. A hit with kids and adults alike - allow two to three hours.
Walking the Grand Prix circuit
Most of the famous Formula 1 circuit runs on ordinary streets - so just walk it: the celebrated hairpin, the tunnel and the harbour straight. Free, and great fun for any sports fan.
Port Hercule & Larvotto beach
The harbour with its unmatched yachts and the promenade around it are the heart of the principality; at the other end lies Larvotto beach - genuinely pleasant for a swim in the warm months.
A day trip along the Riviera
Nice, Menton and the clifftop village of Èze are all minutes away on the coastal railway. Worth giving a full day before or after the match to one of Europe's prettiest train lines.
Worth knowing
- The diagonal red-and-white shirt was adopted in 1960, and its design is attributed to Princess Grace Kelly - the film star who became Princess of Monaco.
- Monaco is a sovereign state - yet the club plays in the French league, one of the few cases in Europe of a club competing in another country's league.
- The stadium's roughly 16,900 seats are equal to about 40% of the entire principality's population.
- For around a decade and a half, the Stade Louis II hosted the UEFA Super Cup every year - European football's ceremonial season opener.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01Sleeping in Monaco is pricey - most fans stay in Nice and take the train: about 25 minutes along the coast, then a fifteen-minute walk from Monaco's station to the stadium through Fontvieille.
- 02The principality is built on a slope - there are plenty of stairs, but also free public lifts and escalators linking the levels. Comfortable shoes are not a tip, they're a requirement.
- 03For food at sane prices head to the Condamine market by the port - excellent local stalls. Club shirts are at the official store near the stadium.
