About the club
Olympique Lyonnais, founded in 1950, grew into one of France's biggest and most consistently successful clubs. Between 2002 and 2008 it wrote a remarkable chapter with seven consecutive French titles - a feat rare anywhere in Europe - and its academy is regarded as one of the continent's finest production lines. This is a club associated with smart football, brilliant youth development, big ambitions and a loyal crowd that fills its home week after week.
And the city itself? Lyon is France's gastronomic capital: cosy traditional bouchon restaurants, indulgent food markets and a Renaissance old town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The stadium
Groupama Stadium (Parc Olympique Lyonnais) opened in 2016 and is one of the most modern grounds in France - around 59,000 seats, excellent sightlines from every corner and plenty of food stands. It sits in Décines, east of the city, with a singing home end behind the goal and a mixed, family-friendly crowd elsewhere. Comfortable, impressive and easy - French football at its most modern.

Things to do in Lyon
Vieux Lyon & the traboules
One of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance quarters and part of a World Heritage site: cobbled lanes, hidden courtyards and the traboules - secret passageways threading between the houses. Worth a short guided tour.
Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse
The covered market named after the city's legendary chef - dozens of stalls of cheese, charcuterie, oysters and pastries. Come hungry and make it your lunch stop.
Fourvière Basilica & the Roman theatres
Take the funicular up to the white basilica above the city - a huge view over Lyon and its two rivers - with two ancient Roman theatres next door, a reminder that Lyon was once the capital of Roman Gaul.
The Presqu'île & Place Bellecour
The peninsula between the Rhône and the Saône is the city's heart: shopping streets, cafés, the vast Place Bellecour and the chocolatiers and patisseries Lyon prides itself on.
Parc de la Tête d'Or
One of France's largest urban parks: a boating lake, botanical gardens and a free zoo. A perfect slow morning, especially with kids.

- Lyon's women's team is one of the most successful in football history, with no fewer than eight Women's Champions League titles.
- Lyon's academy is rated among the best production lines in Europe, having raised generation after generation of French internationals.
- Groupama Stadium is one of the very few grounds in France financed privately by the club itself - most French stadiums are municipally owned.
Tips for the travelling fan
- 01The stadium is in Décines, east of the city. On match days direct trams run from Part-Dieu and from Vaulx-en-Velin La Soie; otherwise take the T7 from Vaulx-en-Velin La Soie to Décines - OL Vallée, the stop right beside the ground. The T3 stops about 800 m away. Leave at least an hour and a half before kick-off; the journey takes time.
- 02Plan your food ahead: the good bouchon restaurants fill up, so book a table a few days in advance. For lunch, head to Les Halles Paul Bocuse.
- 03Stay on the Presqu'île or near Part-Dieu station - both the old town and the tram to the stadium are easy from there. Shirts and souvenirs are at the club store in the stadium and in the city centre.
