About the club

PSV Eindhoven was born in 1913 as the sports club of Philips factory workers and grew into one of the big three of Dutch football. With 27 Dutch league titles, the 1988 European Cup and the 1978 UEFA Cup, this is a genuine powerhouse. Ronaldo and Romário took their first European steps here, and the club remains a launchpad for young stars and fast, attacking football.

Eindhoven is a compact, young and friendly city that lives around its club - you will feel it the moment you step off the train. The stadium is a short walk from the city centre, so matchday flows naturally: morning coffee, a wander through the design district, a drink on the pub street, then straight to your seat. Football at its most accessible and welcoming - families very much included.

The stadium

The Philips Stadion stands on the very ground where PSV has played since 1913 - a stadium in the middle of a neighbourhood, ten minutes' walk from the central station. Its roughly 35,000 seats sit tight to the pitch, the acoustics are warm and loud, and some stands even have heated seats for winter nights. Intimate, close and classically Dutch.

Things to do in Eindhoven

Strijp-S

The historic Philips factory complex reborn as the city's coolest district: galleries, design shops, a skate park and food halls. Proof that Eindhoven is the design capital of the Netherlands.

Philips Museum

The story of the company that shaped the city - early light bulbs, inventions, and the close bond with the football club. Compact, fascinating and great for kids.

Nuenen, the Van Gogh Village

Fifteen minutes away lies the village where Van Gogh painted The Potato Eaters. On the way back, ride the glowing bicycle path inspired by his work - pure magic after dark.

Stratumseind

The longest pub street in the Netherlands - dozens of bars shoulder to shoulder. This is where PSV fans warm up before matches and where the city's pulse beats at night.

DAF Museum

The local truck-maker's museum, with a surprisingly rich collection of cars and trucks. Big fun for kids and motor fans, an easy walk from the centre.

Worth knowing

  • PSV stands for Philips Sport Vereniging - the club was founded as the sports association of the light-bulb factory's workers.
  • PSV has played on the same patch of grass since 1913 - the Philips Stadion was gradually built up around the factory workers' original pitch.
  • In 1988 PSV won the European Cup on penalties - part of a historic treble season alongside the Dutch league and cup.
  • Ronaldo - 'the Phenomenon' - scored more than 50 goals in just two seasons at PSV before moving on to Barcelona and global stardom.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01The stadium is about a ten-minute walk from the central train station - no extra transport needed. Arrive an hour early, circle the ground and enjoy the stalls and streets around it.
  2. 02Before kick-off, grab a drink or a meal on Stratumseind or in the Strijp-S food halls; by the ground itself, try a frikandel or bitterballen - the classic Dutch matchday snacks.
  3. 03The official PSV fan store sits right at the stadium - worth visiting the day before the match, when it is quieter, and keep an eye out for the retro range.
