About the club

Ajax is more than a football club - it is a global school of the beautiful game. The stadium

The Johan Cruijff ArenA, named after the club's greatest legend, is a modern bowl with a retractable roof and around 56,000 seats. Sightlines are excellent from every tier, and the moment the whole stadium sings Bob Marley's 'Three Little Birds' together is one of European football's special rituals. The south end is where the loudest fans gather, driving the atmosphere from first whistle to last.

Things to do in Amsterdam

Canal Cruise

There is no better introduction to the city than an hour gliding under the bridges past the narrow canal houses. Go around sunset, when the lights on the water are at their best.

Museumplein & the Van Gogh Museum

One square, world-class art: the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum sit side by side. Book tickets ahead - both sell out on busy days.

The Jordaan

Amsterdam's most photogenic neighbourhood - quiet lanes, cosy brown cafés and tiny shops. Perfect for an aimless wander and an afternoon coffee.

Albert Cuyp Market

The city's biggest street market. Grab a warm stroopwafel straight off the iron and try classic Dutch herring - perfect cheap street food between sights.

Vondelpark

Amsterdam's green heart. Rent bikes, pick up something tasty and join the locals on the grass - a great slow morning, especially with kids.

  • The club crest hides a secret: the Greek hero Ajax is drawn in exactly 11 lines - one for each player on the pitch.
  • In the early 1970s Ajax won three straight European Cups - the dynasty that made 'Total Football' famous around the world.
  • Bob Marley's 'Three Little Birds' has become the fans' anthem - the whole ArenA sings it together at every home game, a tradition that wins over visitors too.
  • The ArenA is one of Europe's greenest stadiums: thousands of solar panels on the roof, and an energy-storage system built from recycled electric-car batteries.

Tips for the travelling fan

  1. 01The easiest way to the ground is by metro or train to Bijlmer ArenA station, about fifteen minutes from the city centre. Head out an hour or two before kick-off to enjoy the build-up around the entrances.
  2. 02The stadium - like most of the Netherlands - is effectively cashless. Bring a credit card or phone payment for everything from the club shop to a matchday snack.
  3. 03Buy your souvenirs at the official club store next to the stadium - the range beats the city-centre shops, and on matchdays it pays to arrive before the queues build.
